Unethical

October 13, 2008 · 1 Comment

Alaska state investigators released a 263-page report revealing information that Governor Sarah Palin violated state ethics laws when firing former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.

The report is the overall finding of the “Trooperagte” scandal. It confirmed allegations that the Palin family and the Palin administration had put pressure on Walt Monegan to fire Alaska state trooper Mike Wooden after the trooper was involved in a messy divorce with Palins sister. Walt Monegan resisted the pressure from the Plain administration and was subsequently terminated from his position.

Although Governor was well within her legal right as governor to fire the Public Safety Commissioner the ethics report determined that Palin had misused her power because she was pursuing a personal vendetta rather than serving public interest.

Palin dodged questions in a brief interview with Alaskan journalists, stating that she was, “pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing … any hint of any kind of unethical activity there.” She also referred to the investigation as, “a partisan circus.

The investigation has caused quite the uproar for many Alaskan lawmakers who have battled national media pressure and criticism. Megan Stapleton, a former Alaskan journalist has been speaking on behalf of the McCain Palin campaign and has brought many political analysts to the state to help in her defense of the Troopergate scandal. Stapleton, has come under heavy fire from many Alaskans who believe that she has made unfair accusations of Alaskan public officials in order to paint a better Palin picture for rest of the country.
